What Is Microblading?
Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that changes the way your eyebrows look, in some places it’s also called micro-stroking. This procedure is typically administered by a technician or aesthetician who is specially trained in performing the treatment. In some cases, they may be licensed, but depending on the state, a license is not always mandatory.
The person that is performing the procedure will use a special tool, a micro-blade, to draw your eyebrows in your skin. Using more than a hundred tiny strokes, and paired with a special dye, this technique will create a textured appearance that resembles your own natural brow hair. In most cases, this treatment will last a year to 18 months.
When the blade cuts into the skin, it allows the pigment to be deposited into the area of the cuts. This color gives the illusion of brow hair for an extended period. Being that there is minor damage to the skin during this procedure, it’s important to know what to expect and how to maintain your brows after the procedure has been completed.
Post-Microblading Skincare
Immediately following your procedure, you will face some sensitivity in the area where the microblading was completed. For the next 10 days, you will need to ensure that you avoid getting your brows wet and that you refrain from touching your eyebrows while they heal.
- Keep the area on your eyebrows dry for at least 10 days.
- Avoid wearing any makeup for 7 days following the procedure to prevent infection and disturbing the dye.
- Avoid scratching or picking the healing scabs on the brow area
- Don’t submerge yourself in water such as swimming, hot tubs or saunas until the area has healed and you have completed your follow-up appointment.
- Don’t allow your hair to land on your brow line during healing.
- Always apply the provided healing salve as directed.
The procedure is similar to that of a tattoo and the skin care routine you should follow is also the same. The outer surface of your skin will be darker due to the pigment, but the underlying surface will be red and inflamed while it heals. A couple of hours after the treatment is complete, you should gently wash the area with a cotton ball soaked in sterilized water to remove excess pigment and cleanse the area.
Microblading Maintenance Suggestions
Here are a few steps you should follow to maintain your brows and skin after you have completed your microblading session.
To maintain the look of your brows, you should get a touch up every 12 months. This allows you to maintain the pigment color while also making any styling changes you desire. Always use sunscreen to protect your skin and make sure to use a high SPF on the treated area to reduce fading.
Make sure that the blade your aesthetician uses is a one-time use instrument. This will ensure that you have less scarring and reduces your chances of infection. If your tech doesn’t want to use a disposable tool, you should decline the treatment immediately.
